2 comments May 3, 2021

We recently sat down to talk with 5-string banjo legend Tony Trischka. Tony has been a pioneer in progressive bluegrass and 5-string banjo for decades. He has won numerous awards and has pushed the banjo into new territories.

As well as being an incredible player, Tony is an excellent teacher. His most famous student is Bela Fleck. He works with ArtistWorks to offer a very in depth series of interactive video lessons.

Recently Tony released Shall We Hope, a recording he had been working on for over 12 years. Shall We Hope is a through story taking place during the Civil War in the United States. The story is told through Tony's songwriting and features a an incredible cast of artists as wide ranging as Guy Davis, John Lithgow, Catherine Russel, Van Dyke Parks, The Violent Femmes, and more.

Tony is my teacher over on ArtistWorks. I have never heard him say an unkind word to anyone. He is self effacing and humble. Not only have I learned about the Banjo from him, but I’ve learned what a great teacher is supposed to be. I don’t say this lightly because I myself performed as a solo singer in Opera, Light Opera, Oratorio, Musical Theatre and Church music, directed choirs and taught voice for some 45 years. He is a wonderful encourager. Personally, I can’t thank him enough for what I’ve learned from him. An all around great human being.
